Is Gambling Online Legal?

Gambling online can be thought of as a type of World of Warcraft (WoW) addicting behaviour. Most addicts to WoW do not recognise it as such but there is a certain amount of danger involved because gambling online involves using your credit card or paying with PayPal and thus putting you at risk of having your account closed by the credit card provider or gaming sites which use these services. So what are the things that you should watch out for when you are thinking of going online to play casino games?

There are two types of gambling online: classic games like poker, blackjack and bingo and then there is virtual poker where you play with real money. Virtual online casinos are very popular because you do not need to leave your living room to play your favorite casino games. Online gambling is any type of gambling conducted over the internet without having to leave your home. This includes sports betting, online casinos and virtual poker. The first internet gambling venue open to the public, was online ticketing for the first Liechtenstein International Poker Tournament in 1994.

Recently the UK government brought in a piece of legislation called the Wire Act which makes it illegal to transfer money through any means not expressly authorized by the Wire Act. What the Wire Act means is that all forms of gambling online are covered and you cannot send a payment wire online if the site is not following the guidelines of the Wire Act. One example is that you cannot transfer money to a person in the state of New York if you were playing in Las Vegas. If a site follows the guidelines of the Wire Act then you will not have any problems with this type of law. However, if the site you are playing on is not following the guidelines of the Wire Act then you may find yourself facing some legal issues as a result.
