In the 17th century, the Dutch began to organize lotteries. One of the first on German soil was held in Hamburg in 1614.

There were also lots of public lotteries in the colonies. George Washington managed several of them. His Mountain Road Lottery was an example of one. Ticket sales went for $15,000. It was an unsuccessful endeavor, but rare tickets were sold for thousands of dollars.
